My Background

My fields of work have included community capacity building, training, organisational development, fundraising, marketing, human resource management and financial management. I have a BA (Hons) in Business Administration, and additional qualifications in Enterprise Studies, Community Development Work and Public Administration.

As a Network Development manager, I developed and ran an area based network of community and voluntary sector organisations. For four years I provided support and advice to community groups around capacity building including fundraising and organisational development. I ran events and co-wrote a good practice guide on this subject. I conducted community consultations, delivered both formal and informal training and managed a team of trainee community workers. I also trained and supported a local residents group to run a development fund that distributed grants of over £400,000 over 4 years to over 50 different groups and organisations.

As a Communications and PR Co-ordinator I was responsible for the dissemination of good practice as a Health Improvement Initiative under the NHS Beacon Award scheme. I provided information and support to new and existing projects in developing Healthy Living initiatives. As part of this role I ran regular workshops, developed a web-site, provided consultancy services and offered practical support to developing Healthy Living Centres across the UK.

I also worked as part of the management team to set up and development a highly acclaimed Healthy Living Centre; The West End Health Resource Centre in Newcastle. As the Health and Fitness Manager my main duties were to manage, organise and monitor the overall development of the Health & Fitness Facility. I set up a New Deal Training Programme, was responsible for all HRM issues, assisted in fundraising and the development of long-term business plans. I was responsible for marketing the facility as a local resource, meeting the needs of marginalised groups and forging links with other local health projects and community groups.

I have also worked a Manager within a local authority setting, I was responsible for the preparation of accounts and financial reports, setting and controlling budgets and all management and supervisory duties include staff training, appraisal and appointments.

In addition, I have managed a small business for the last 15 years, running a construction company with my partner. This has provided me with valuable experience in the day-to-day realities of running a small business in a competitive environment. I prepare accounts including VAT accounting, run a PAYE scheme and deal with all HRM issues.

I have undertaken various voluntary works in my own community including acting as Chair of Little Oaks Nursery, a registered charity and Social Enterprise in Northumberland.
